FAYETTEVILLE -- For those expecting a high-scoring shootout between Conway and Fayetteville in the Class 7A state semifinals Friday night, it was the defenses of both teams that stole the show.

Fayetteville's defense got two straight stops in the fourth quarter and Nathan Kachel's 27-yard field with 5:28 remaining proved to be the difference in a 24-21 victory for the Bulldogs at Harmon Field.

"Some of the guys in the paper today thought this would be a high-scoring, 40-point game," Fayetteville Coach Casey Dick said. "You had two great offenses, but what people don't realize is those are two really good defenses that come to battle every week. They're tested. They're well-coached. Kids show up and believe in the system.
